FEES EXPLAINED
Sourcing agent fees, explained
1. The short answer
Most China sourcing agents charge a commission of 5–10% of the order value, and the percentage usually falls as orders get bigger. Some charge a fixed project fee or a monthly retainer instead. What matters more than the headline rate is what the fee includes and whether the agent is honest about the factory price.
2. The three common fee models
Commission: a percentage of the order value, typically 5–10%. Simple and tied to your order size, which is why most importers use it.
Fixed fee or retainer: a set price per project or per month. Useful for product development or a steady flow of orders, but you pay even in quiet months.
Open book: the agent shows you the factory, the factory's own price and the agent's fee separately, so you can see exactly where every dollar goes.
3. ENA's fees
Orders under US$100,000: 5% of the order value.
Orders of US$100,000 or more: 3% of the order value, including one third-party pre-shipment inspection.
Every project is quoted case by case, because the right fee depends on your product, the services you need and how often you order. You get the full quote in writing before any work starts.
4. Open-book sourcing
If you prefer full transparency, ENA can work open book. You see the factory's name and location, the factory's own quotation and our fee as separate lines. Many retail suppliers and larger importers choose this because it makes cost reviews and audits simple.
5. What is usually billed separately
Samples and sample courier, sea or air freight, import duties and taxes in your country, and any extra inspections or factory audits beyond what your quote includes are normally charged at cost. Ask for these to be listed in your quote so nothing surprises you later.
6. Hidden costs to watch for
A low headline rate can hide a bigger cost. Watch for trading companies presented as factories, which add their own markup, and for agents who also take commission from the factory, which means the factory price you see is not the real one. Ask every agent two questions: do you accept payments from factories, and can I see the factory's own quote?
7. How to compare agent quotes
Send every agent the same product spec, quantity and target price. Ask what is included, for example negotiation, samples, inspection and shipping coordination. Ask whether you will know the factory. Then compare the total landed cost of your goods, not just the percentage.
